Tiffany Favrile Glass Lamps

Tiffany combined his talents as a colorist, naturalist, and designer. He used the technology that he had developed for his windows to produce blown glass with surfaces, hues, and forms that were totally new. After manipulating the varicolored glass, the final form was often fumed with metallic oxides to achieve rainbow iridescence. This Favrile glass was used for vases, lampshades, and vessels.

The trade name Favrile was derived from an Old English word, fabrile, meaning handcrafted. Favrile is distinguished by brilliant or deeply toned colors. It is usually iridescent like the wings of certain American butterflies, the neck of pigeons and peacocks, and the wing covers of various beetles.
