One type of the Mission style sconce was developed from 19th century Spanish Mission architecture, which is also usually linked to the arts and crafts movement of the same period. This Mission style is prevalent in Spanish churches, which usually contain long hallways flanked with Mission style sconces and entrances with wall mount lighting fixtures. Compared to the wide variety of wall sconces available, traditional Mission style sconces are more rustic and square. Mission stained glass sconces are usually in finishes of rust brown.

Another type of Mission stained glass sconce is Southwest. The Southwest style is strongly highlighted by strong textures, earthy brown colors and handcrafted objects. Typical Southwest Mission style sconces have tribal designs, combined with images of lizards, birds, bears or other animals. Another type of Southwest sconce is the geometric step design.

While CFL's for stained glass lamps may be an option for candles, the historical designs of southwestern style sconces are redesigned in today’s designs. With different light variations possible, these wall sconces can emit multiple degrees of brightness to create the needed effect for the room.

Wall sconces were traditionally used as a lighting source, but today, they also double as decorative pieces. Interior decorators utilize them to accentuate a certain design theme within a room, or to sprinkle a tinge of uniqueness in an otherwise plain décor.
